Outpatient Registered Dietitian, Staff Position

Job Requirements

Full time staff position will support the opening of a new feeding clinic and on-going community programs. The dietitian will join a multidisciplinary team that includes behavioral psychology, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology focused on assessing and treating children and adolescents with complex feeding issues and other associated medical or developmental disabilities. He/she will participate in multidisciplinary and individual evaluations and develop appropriate nutrition care plans and diet advancement. The dietitian will also join recreational therapists in providing nutritional support in our community SHAPEDOWN program, a national weight management program for kids and teens. He/she will comply with documentation, HIPAA, and other facility requirements in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations and company policies. The dietitian will demonstrate effective time management, flexibility and ability to problem solve while providing high-level, evidence-based quality of care.


Essential job duties:

  1. Complete assessment, treatment, consultation and discharge planning for infants, children, and adolescents within the outpatient clinic and community programs.
  2. Provide comprehensive therapeutic nutrition counseling and education to patients and caregivers in the outpatient clinic and community programs.
  3. Provide nutrition education and in-service education to meet the needs of patients, family members, and staff.
  4. Create nutritional programs based on the health needs of child/adolescent and counsel him/her on how to lead a healthier lifestyle.
  5. Maintain communication with child/adolescent’s primary care physician and other healthcare providers through progress reports, phone calls, or other forms of communication.
  6. Provide relief nutrition management services for inpatient units and make recommendations to dietary, nursing and physicians as necessary.
  7. Demonstrate essential skill competency in the area of nutrition using evidence-based assessment methods, treatment modalities, equipment and protocols.
  8. Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills with patients, their family and other caregivers, outside providers, supervisor and team members.
  9. Adhere to documentation guidelines regarding timeframe, form and content of written evaluations, progress notes and discharge reports consistent with company policy and regulatory bodies (e.g. The Joint Commission, Department of Health, CARF and AND).
  10. Assist program manager with development and growth of clinic or program functions as it relates to dietetics.
  11. Participate in multidisciplinary activities related to patient care and professional training.
  12. Maintain professional clinical competency requirements and participate in performance improvement initiatives and career development.
  13. Participate in clinic marketing and outreach activities in the community.

Required Experience:

Minimum of two years’ experience providing nutrition therapy in a clinical setting. Experience in a physical disability setting obtained in an acute care or rehabilitation facility or previous pediatric clinical nutrition experience preferred.

A minimum of 2-3 years of prior nutrition experience in other areas will be considered in lieu of pediatric experience.

This position will NOT support a new graduate.


Current registration as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

BLS (Basic Life Support) through the American Heart Association.

Current licensure as a registered dietitian in District of Columbia. If licensed in another state, DC licensure must be applied for before time of start date.

Board Certification as a Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) recommended/preferred.

Active member of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) preferred.

Required Education:

Bachelor’s or graduate degree with completion of a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

Completed an ACEND accredited or approved supervised practice program.
